Sewer systems are vital to the health, safety, and
welfare of the citizens in any municipality. The availability of sanitary sewers in a growing area encourages
development to take place. The City's wastewater treatment plant is located on the north side of Nelson Street, east of the railroad
tracks and north of the City Lake. The
treatment plant was constructed in 1981 and has not had any major
improvements since 2007 when the City added a belt press to provide more efficient processing of wastewater sludge. The sanitary sewer system has the
following characteristics: - The wastewater treatment plant capacity is 0.187 MGD (million gallons per day).
- The current plant flow is 0.10 to 0.12 MGD, of which the plant is operating between 53% and 64% capacity.
- The City has one lift station located on the south side
of Highway 56 between West 8th and West 7th Streets,
which serves about ten houses. The rest
of the City is served by gravity flow sewers.
- The City has an operator present at the plant eight hours per
day on weekdays and a minimum of one hour per day on weekends and holidays.
- There are two City
employees who are certified Wastewater Plant Operators. One is certified as a Class 2 operator in the State of Kansas; the
other is certified as a Class 1 operator.
- The
City has very specific regulations for private sewage disposal systems and septic
tanks. The regulations encourage
connection to the public sewage disposal system. “To the extent feasible, public sewage
disposal systems shall be used for the disposal of all sewage within the city
limits of Edgerton, and no private sewage disposal system shall be permitted
under this Article whenever a public sewage disposal systems is available to
serve the property.” (Private Sewage Disposal Systems Regulations, January 12,
1995)
