Edgerton will soon be home to a 1,000-acre development that will contain a 440-acre BNSF Intermodal Facility and the 560-acre Logistics Park-KC. The BNSF Intermodal Facility will provide businesses with a direct connection to the global supply chain via the BNSF's transcontinental railroad that begins in Long Beach, California and terminates in Chicago, Illinois. The facility will provide multi-modal transportation for many goods being imported from China and the Pacific Rim. The facility will offer companies the ability to quickly and efficiently ship goods by rail and truck to their final destinations.Kansas City is an excellent place for the Intermodal Facility because the Kansas City metropolitan area is one of the leading rail and distribution centers in the United States. With easy transportation access to local and regional markets, Kansas City is positioned to serve the Midwest as a distribution hub well into the future. The Logistics Park-KC, which will be owned and operated by the Allen Group of Kansas City, is projected to contain a final build-out of 7.1 million square feet of warehousing and distribution centers surrounding the Intermodal Facility. The Edgerton Intermodal Facility presents some excellent opportunities for companies wanting to reduce their fuel and drayage costs associated with shipping products. Edgerton will also be ideally situated to take advantage of a proposed new interchange on Interstate 35 that will provide access to the BNSF Intermodal Facility. At this time, the preferred location for this new interchange is at Homestead Lane directly south of the proposed entrance into the Intermodal Facility. Additional development opportunities will exist around this proposed interstate, although the Kansas Department of Transportation is still completing the study for the interchange. It is anticipated that this critical transportation feature will be completed in about five to seven years. The City is situated along the east-west corridor of US Highway 56, which provides transportation access to Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas to the west and New Century Air Center and Olathe, Kansas to the east. Interstate 35 is located on the southern boundary of the community with north-south access from Laredo, Texas to Duluth, MN. Interstate 70 is located thirty-eight minutes (36 miles) north of Edgerton and provides east-west connectivity. The Kansas City International Airport is located forty-five minutes northeast of the City.
