Located in the southwest corner of Johnson County, Kansas, Edgerton is an idyllic community with a rich and colorful past. The historic Oregon and Sante Fe Trails parted just a few miles east of town. Incorporated in 1883, Edgerton was named for the chief railroad engineer who helped lay down the railroad tracks that passed by the future town site. The Santa Fe Railroad breathed life into an area that was originally bounty lands for soldiers who fought in the Indian Wars and the War of 1812. Edgerton’s birth was the death knell for the nearby towns of Lanesfield and McCamish. These towns were not on the rail line and their settlers, and many of their buildings, moved to the more prosperous Edgerton. The stone schoolhouse at Lanesfield has been reserved as part of a historic site.
Today, the residents of Edgerton enjoy a small-town, rural setting in one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. The City of Edgerton is
accessible from Highway 56 to the north and Interstate 35 two miles to the south. In Edgerton you will find charming older neighborhoods as well as some of the newest housing in Johnson County. Ironically, the City is returning to its railroad past. Not only does the Burlington Northern Santa Fe's transcontinental line run through the community, but the City will soon be the location of a 1,000-acre "inland port" connecting Edgerton and the Kansas City metropolitan area with trade from the Pacific Rim. The 1,000-acre development will be constructed in partnership with the City of Edgerton, BNSF Railway, and the Allen Group of Kansas City. Edgerton will be an active participant in the global supply chain, allowing corporations to connect their products with customers. The development will contain approximately 7.1 million square feet of warehousing and distribution centers.Firmly anchored with rich historical roots, the "Southwest Corner Stone" of bustling Johnson County retains its small, hometown character. Come experience Edgerton and share in our rich past and exciting future growth.
